HAMILTON Crystal Software

The crystallization of proteins is a multi-factorial process that depends on the interplay of several independent parameters such as temperature, protein concentration, crystallization agent concentration and the presence and nature of impurities or additives.

To determine the optimal crystallization conditions, special screens for testing various conditions can be developed, and ready-mixed precipitate solutions can be applied. In order to fully automate this process, HAMILTON has developed a proprietary protein crystallization workstation based on the MICROLAB STAR line and Crystal software which allows setup of experiments in a few simple steps.

Structure of the Software

HAMILTON’s new Crystal Software provides a complete solution on an Industry standard liquid handling platform.

Crystal Software easily automates your Screens with an intuitive and simple user interface. The inclusion of a Database with the software enables the user to close the loop on all developed screens by running a screen based on a single hit, expanding the screen and by choosing reagent ranges and additives.

Real time set up and simulation is available to visualise your available resources prior to running a screen. Additionally, Crystal supports mixed buffers for pH screens, setting up of multiple screens on one plate and the creation of additive screens by adding a single component to every drop or by adding the contents of an already defined screen to the well of a plate. An import function to load xml-based reagent formulations from the web is also available.

The Hamilton MicroLab STARline is an industry standard platform and enables you to automate the entire crystallography process on one instrument.

The STAR is controlled by it's native software (Vector) which enables advanced Air-Displacement pipetting and CO-RE soft tip pickup and eject functions. The full capabilities of the instrument are available, including imager integration and control from a single keyboard.

The Hamilton STARline instruments are fully configurable with 1-16 pipetting channels and either 96 or 384 channel heads or a nanopipettor. Dual arm configurations are also available.
